The New England Unit is the founding unit of The Herb Society of America. In 1933, seven women formed an educational society dedicated to the study and use of herbs. The Society has grown from one unit to 44, and from the initial seven members to more than 2,400 members in the United States, Canada and other countries. The New England Unit has approximately 100 members living mostly in Massachusetts.
The New England Unit maintains a Teaching Herb Garden at Elm Bank (home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society) in Wellesley, MA. The garden was established in 2001. A custom built circular bench was installed in 2004, and surrounds the Ginkgo tree, the focal point of our garden. Please come and visit!
Throughout the year, the New England Unit holds educational symposia, meetings and workshops on herbal topics. These are held at Elm Bank, as well as other locations. Our meetings are generally held during the day, during the week, to accommodate the distances members travel.
We hold an annual Herb Plant Sale at Elm Bank, which is open to the public. Our plant sale is traditionally held the day before Mother's Day. To receive a postcard reminder for next year's herb plant sale, please fill out this form.
